20th Century Girl is a film made in 2022 but was set in 1999 going into the new century. Two best friends who can’t wait to spend the rest of the school year together, but one is going to the United States to get heart surgery. However, she doesn’t want to leave because she fell in love with a guy named Baek Hyun-jin. Na Bo-ra promises to follow him everywhere to find out more about him for Yeon-du so it doesn’t seem like she missed out on getting to know him. Na Bo-ra stalks the guy who she thinks is Baek Hyun-jin, and ends up falling in love with his best friend.
Yeon-du ends up coming back and sees that Na Bo-ra was hanging out with who Na Bo-ra thinks is Baek Hyun-jin and Poong Woon-ho. It turned out that Na Bo-ra was mistaken and it wasn’t Baek Hyun-jin who Yeon-du was in love with, but she was in love with Poong Woon-ho. Na Bo-ra was in love with him too.
The whole film revolves around young love and is a coming of age movie. The movie represents friendship and teenage love throughout the 119 minutes. It has become popular in the media today because of how it not only shows that teens can experience love, but because it’s overall saddening in the end. The film is based on the director’s own experience. 20th Century Girl isn’t the only film that has this storyline. There are other films like ‘Untamed Heart’ who are under the same category! But, what is it with people finding this genre so interesting?
A lot of people who end up watching these genres are either people watching it to have a reason to cry, to relate, to kill time, or are just hopeless romantics who believe it’ll maybe happen to them. Regardless, these films get tons of views and are really known in pop culture! 20th Century Girl is one of those films that has so much emotion that people can empathize with. That’s what makes a lot of people so attracted to the movie.
