AI was originally created in 1956, made so machines could do tasks that humans were capable of doing. But the use of AI has changed.
AI has been affecting many students and people all over. AI has been being used as a way for students to learn new things, to help improve their knowledge. If students are struggling in a topic, AI could help them improve their understanding. AI could also help students start essays, or get a better idea on how to do certain things. Mrs. Spiker, a science teacher had been asked her opinion on AI, she stated, “Love it, but I hate it. Love what we can do with it, but hate that students don’t know how to use it.” Students could ask AI for help on subjects to get a better understanding of it. But going to get the answer is easier to do than learning how to do anything.
Though, the use of AI in education has drawbacks. Mrs. Albornoz , a Spanish teacher at North Canyon says, “It’s helpful, but I think they can be kind of lazy because they quote everything. They don’t try.” Because students are using AI to do the thinking, they’re losing the chances to learn things and do things on their own. Using AI for essays could result in plagiarism from other authors. AI searches through the internet to find information to answer the question that has been given. This means that it’s taking the hard work from multiple authors; using the writing to create a new essay.

They might not have all the facts right, yet AI is still using the information. Not to mention that the writing is from people’s opinions, so AI is stealing their thoughts. Reddit isn’t known for having the best people and information on its site in general. Since AI is going through multiple sites to find information, AI could be taking false information from an uneducated author, like stated before.
The AI then includes the false information into the students paper, giving them an unreliable essay. Using AI for essays is considered cheating in many schools, in which most teachers use AI checkers if they suppose a student is using it. If the paper is checked and shows that it’s AI, the teacher will usually fail the student.
Moreover, the overuse of AI is taking away many people’s creativity. People have been asking AI to create images or drawings. An artist at North Canyon High School was asked about how they felt about AI artwork. “I think AI is stupid when it comes to art. AI should be helping artists, not replacing them. In fact, I think AI shouldn’t even do creative art, it should be helping doctors. Not stealing peoples jobs.” People are no longer using their brain or skills to create their own pictures. AI steals from artists all the time without their consent. So not only are people not using their own imagination and effort, they’re unintentionally stealing an artist’s hard work, creativity, and style all without them knowing. Some people state that using AI makes art more accessible for everyone, but even Ancient Egypt was creating art with just rocks. Art has been and is still accessible for everyone. Using AI for art is only hurting people’s creative minds and stealing from artists.
Additionally, AI has many negative effects on the environment. ChatGPT takes around five to ten times the amount of energy that a normal google search would. As stated before, AI uses false information all the time, so using a site such as ChatGPT not only gives people the wrong information, but also uses more energy. Doing a quick google search would be more energy effective, but also would get the correct answers. AI data centers also produce electronic waste, which is harmful to the environment and people. AI also uses more than six times the amount of water than Denmark does. Water is already limited as it is, and using AI for a simple search is wasting the water.
