Over consumerism in 2025 is a major issue. Over the years the rate of consumerism has flown exponentially through the roof. TikTok has made this an even bigger issue due to the viral “Restocking Videos”. These videos are usually one to two minutes of restocking fridges, bathrooms, and bedrooms with containers filled with items. These videos get tens of thousands of views and people are heavily influenced to join in on this trend.
“Restocking videos are satisfying, but sometimes they seem out of hand. Most of them consist of reusable items that didn’t need to be replaced. So most of them are wasteful,” says Cassy Shirritt. As we continue to overuse and overspend money on all of these products they continue to become more and more scarce as the years go by. This also causes more waste and makes it harder for people who need resources to get them. “I tried to do a month where I didn’t buy anything but Essentials but I caved in and bought excess beauty products” Mackenzie fountain exclaimed.
In 2023, humanity consumed resources 1.75 times faster than the world can generate them. To put that into perspective if everyone on earth lived like the average person in the U.S we would need five earths to sustain their lifestyles. If we continue to carelessly buy all these products by 2050 the world may not be able to produce resources at all. There are solutions to consumerism: not buying items that aren’t needed repeatedly, buying long lasting items that are needed. Sharing resources and not wasting them for Tik Tok views. Donating to shelters or stores unwanted items instead of throwing them out and filling wastelands in the process.
Ultimately over consumerism is an issue that not many people pay attention to. There needs to be more awareness for these types of things before it gets too late. After so much years of wasteful spending and using the world is slowly becoming more and more void of resources. In my opinion certain parts of the world take the resources we have for granted. They overspend and over use without a second thought of how it could affect people. I too am a person who overspends frequently and I will also do my part to try and motivate others to slow down over consumerism so future generations will have the resources they need.
