Disclaimer: These Movies aren´t the top 5, but are some fan favorites.
1. The Breakfast Club
The Breakfast Club was released on February 15, 1985, this movie consists of comedy and drama. This is a teen film where 5 kids have different cliques and spend a Saturday in detention together. In the beginning, they judge each other based on their looks. John who plays the role of the ¨criminal¨, Brian who plays the ¨brains¨ of the group, Claire who plays ¨Ms. Popular¨, Andrew who plays the ¨jock/athlete¨, last but not least Allison who plays the ¨alternative¨, these are all the rolls each actor plays (these names are the ones they used in the movies, not their actual name). Little by little they express their feelings, they open up on personal things, family issues, fear, and also expectations from their family and the school. By the end of the movie, they all have a better understanding for each other and have respect for one another.
2. Ferris Bueller’s Day Off
The movie Ferris Bueller’s Day Off was released on June 11, 1986, which consists of comedy and drama. This is also a teens film where a teenager named Ferris Bueller´s who decides to skip a day of school and explore the streets of Chicago in his friends Cameron dads car, which is a 1961 Ferrari 250 GT California Spider. He then persuades his best friend Cameron and his girlfriend to join him. All together they explore the city, they visit a museum, go to a fancy restaurant, and end up in a parade. In the meantime the principal at their high school becomes suspicious and tries to catch Ferris in the act. In the end this movie is about letting loose, friendships, and most of all having fun.
3. Dead Poets Society
The movie Dead Poets Society was released on June 2, 1989 which is a dramatic film. It’s about an English teacher, John Keating who teaches at a strict all boys academy. He inspires his students through poetry and non-traditional teaching. He encourages his students to learn how to think for themselves and embraces the motto ¨carpe diem¨ which means seize the day. Some students are in a secret club called Dead Poets Society, in that club they share poetry and personal dreams. On the other hand, tension grows and interferes with the schools rigid traditions and also the parents expectations. This leads to one of the students, Neil Perry taking his life due to his father’s actions leaving him hopeless and trapped. In the end this movie is about passion, and the struggles of freedom.
4. Home Alone
The movie Home Alone was released on November 16, 1990 which is family friendly and full of comedy. Home Alone is a movie about a boy named Kevin who accidentally gets left home while his family visits Paris. At first, Kevin begins to like being home alone with no parents bossing him around and no rules to follow whatsoever. Later on Kevin has to defend his house from the burglars, Harry and Marv, together they plan to rob the neighborhood. Kevin plays tricks with the thieves and ends up saving his house from being robbed. In the end, Kevin’s family returns and then he realizes the importance of family and how you should be together for the holidays to show love and affection.
5. The Sandlot
The movie The Sandlot was released on April 7, 1993, which is a family and drama film. A young boy named Scotty Smalls moves to a new state and neighborhood and he struggles to fit in. Overtime he makes friends with Benny ¨The Jet¨ Rodriguez and becomes part of his friend group, together they play baseball everyday at the sandlot. Together they have fun adventures, in which one of them was overcoming their fear of the guard dog ¨The Beast¨. Scotty and his friends lose Scooty’s stepdads baseball was signed by the one and only Babe Ruth, their mission was to get the ball back. In the end the friend group got the ball back and made a new friend in the process. This film captures the happiness of childhood memories and bonds that last a lifetime.
