Have you noticed lately, Halloween just hasn’t been what it used to be? If you have walked around in a grocery store, you’ll see that lots of Halloween decor is mainly cute, soft, more appealing colors, and not what it was before. Not to mention the fact that DIY costumes seem to have lost their whimsy and creativity.
Many people think of Halloween as orange, black, and sometimes purple. When a student was asked about what they thought about when it came to Halloween, they stated. “I usually think of the colors black and orange, and kids running around in the dark in their costumes.” But the decor in stores now has shades of pink, as if it’s Valentine’s day. Also, there’s many decorations that are beige and boring, compared to the dark gothic colors of earlier years. People seem to be buying and making Halloween decor beige and softer hues just to fit their aesthetic. Decorating your own house obviously is personal preference, but this new decor isn’t as fun and eye-catching as it used to be.
Not to mention the inflated prices of Halloween candy. “The bag of Halloween candy by your door now costs $16.39 – a whopping 78% more than the $9.19 you paid back in 2020. ” stated by the article Halloween Candy Prices Jump 78% Since 2020. Halloween has always been a fun day for kids and parents. Kids are able to get free candy and dress up as their favorite characters, and parents giving out candy can see children getting excited over candy and costumes. But now, after seeing the prices, Halloween candy is starting to seem like a luxury to have.
Costumes today seem to be losing their whimsy compared to what they used to be. Years before, costumes used to be above and beyond. Especially when it comes to custom costumes. People always seem to have extravagant costumes when they’re made by hand. But now, if you look up costume ideas on TikTok or Instagram, many of the “ideas” are made of jeans and colored tank tops/tube tops. Costumes have lost their creativity and are now just basic. Not to mention the fact that Spirit Halloween has costumes that are all cheap quality and are so flimsy that they break after one use.
Ultimately, with the loss of color in decorations, inflated candy prices, and basic costumes, Halloween has lost its charm. Though, individuals who still make extraordinary costumes and who decorate their houses in scary and fun ways will always make Halloween what it used to be.
