What It Is To Be an Ally

As Black History Month is coming to a close, it is important to take lessons from the month and act accordingly for the future. There are many ways to be an effective ally but the most important part is remaining consistent. Just because Black History Month is nearly over does not mean that others should stop being considerate of the black community.

In order to be an ally, beyond understanding that respectfulness doesn’t end in March, there are some things that allies can do. One thing they must do first is confront their racism. Whether it be internalized racism, racism at home, among their friend group, or elsewhere around them. From there, one needs to research and educate themselves. One of the biggest causes of racism is a lack of knowledge, especially of history. It is also important to encourage and accept inclusion in friend groups, professional settings, media, or other fields. Finally, the most important thing is to support people of color; whether in personal, social situations, or a more grand scheme, political or economic.
