Valentine’s Day is an eventful holiday filled with chocolates, love, and gifts. However, the origin of this day isn’t relatively close to the lovable activities we participate in. Let’s go all the way back to the 3rd century in Rome, Italy– the place where Saint Valentine of Terni resided. This Saint was one of the two people who were executed on the 14th of February. The reason? Valentine was caught secretly officiating weddings for Roman soldiers; this was against the emperor’s wishes. These actions can be connected to the importance of love we see today.
In a different year, another Saint by the name of Valentine, was executed. Not only by the same emperor but also on the same date: February 14th. However, the cause of death was being beaten to death with clubs as well as being beheaded. All due to refusing to renounce his faith, according to Vatican News. Over time, the meaning of Valentine’s Day began to be the loving and present-filled holiday we currently celebrate. We’re lucky to have this day to show our love to those we care about. How will you spend this year’s Valentine’s Day?
