Halloween has finally passed, and the next holiday to come is Thanksgiving- wait, Christmas? Over recent years, it seems that Thanksgiving is being overlooked.
After Halloween, stores start putting up Christmas decorations and start to play Christmas music. I mean, can you even name a song that’s based on Thanksgiving? No wonder why they switch to Christmas songs so early. Despite the fact there are Thanksgiving decorations, there’s a superior amount of Christmas and Halloween decorations rather than one’s for Thanksgiving. How many times have you driven by a house and seen a giant turkey compared to a giant Santa? Christmas decorations are already put out days before Halloween passes. Apparently no holiday can stand alone.
Even Starbucks takes down their Pumpkin Spice Lattes (made for Halloween and the autumn spirit) in early November and replaces them with Christmas and winter themed drinks. Thanksgiving always falls on the fourth thursday of November; winter starts on the 21st/22nd of December. Therefore, Thanksgiving can’t even get the drink of the season that it’s in.
But why is Thanksgiving important and not worth being ignored? Sasha Garcia was asked why they thought Thanksgiving should be more appreciated. They stated, “Because, in its way, Thanksgiving is important. People get to see their families after a long period of time.” Thanksgiving brings friends and families together, which is an important aspect for many. Some families can’t see each other often, so being able to go to your family’s house, share a big meal, and say why you’re thankful for one another is a gift for most.
“I think that when we jump to Christmas so quickly, Thanksgiving becomes more of a novelty, and we lose appreciation of that time of the year. It loses its specialness.” – A North Canyon student mentioned. Which is true. Thanksgiving obviously encourages thankfulness, and when we skip to Christmas after Halloween, we forget about the point of Thanksgiving. Like stated before, families are able to say why they are thankful for each other and much more. The point of Thanksgiving is to give thanks to the years blessings and harvests. People are able to reflect on the long year they had, and give thanks to the people they met and all the things that happened. This is an important and key thing to do, so that people don’t become ungrateful and forget all of the good things that had happened to them.
All things considered, Thanksgiving is a holiday worth remembering, and shouldn’t be skipped. This Thanksgiving, people should make sure to tell their friends and family that they appreciate them, and bring back the Thanksgiving spirit.
