Roblox is an app that many people have grown up on. It originally opened up to the public in 2006, meaning 2 generations of people were able to play the game. But a lot has changed. The games many people grew up with in 2016 are completely different from games now.
For starters, games back in 2016 seemed like they were actually made for kids. Ace Haight voiced, “In 2016 Roblox games were more for kids (Hide n’ Seek Extreme, Epic Mini Games, Blox Hunt, Natural Disasters, etc.) but now, games are weirdly freaky and brain rotted. In 2016, games that were made for kids were normal… In my opinion, it’s weird.” Back in 2016, the games that were targeted towards kids were basic games that many already knew how to play. But now, there’s games that are based on brainrot, like Steal A Brainrot, which is a highly addictive tycoon game.
Additionally, Roblox used to be known for their blocky R6 characters. But now, Roblox offers R15 characters, allowing more complex animations, joint movement, and more customization. Even though this sounds like a good update on the characters, many people dislike the new look. Roblox was well loved and known for their blocky characters, like stated before, so the new update basically took away Roblox’s character. Many also complain about how bad the new character style looks. Niome Walston said, “Nowadays everyone wants to be “Cute” and avatars are less original and fun.”
On top of that, there has been a change in community and events. 2016 was known for “Egg Hunts” and community-driven, holiday events (Hallow Eve, Summer Camp, Holiday Giveaway, etc) Today, events are now sponsored and are brand collaborations. The sponsored events replace the Roblox’s organic, community-driven events with low-quality, corporate advertisements. One student mentioned “It’s weird that there are sponsored games and events on Roblox. I mean, it’s a game for kids, they shouldn’t be targeting them.” They are designed for engagement over fun!
