International Baccalaureate (IB) exams are often described as the final battle for high school testing. If you have spent any time looking at the test schedules, you already know that the next few weeks are going to be intense. From late April through mid-May, many students will essentially be glued into room 404, fighting for their lives to answer the prompts and complete difficult tests. While it looks like a lot on paper, understanding the rhythm of the schedule is the first step towards being prepared.
The marathon officially begins on Wednesday, April 29th, with Business Management taking the lead. IB doesn’t exactly believe in a slow warm up, so many students will find themselves dealing with heavy back to back testing days right out of the gate. For instance, those taking SL ESS and HL History will finish an afternoon session on April 30th just to be back in their seats by 8:30 AM on May 4th. This split session format is the standard; most subjects are broken into multiple papers spread across two days, meaning you rarely get to finish a subject in a single sitting.
Life inside the testing room is it own unique experience. Room 404 will likely become a place of absolute silence, safe for those testing to think. You can expect a very rigid routine involving ID checks, #2 pencils, erasers, and a strict electronic guideline. These sessions vary significantly in length, ranging from two hours papers like SL Math to a grueling three and a half hour test for HL Literature. Staying focused for that long requires more than just knowing the material; it requires genuine physical and mental stamina.
To survive this season, especially the second week, you have to manage your energy levels carefully. Avoid the temptation to pull an all-nighter before the exam, since your brain needs to sleep to process the complex information needed for the exams. It is also vital to keep a close eye on the clock while testing, as IB exams have tough time limits. Losing track of time even for 10 minutes can result in leaving an entire section blank. It will be tough, but once your pencil hits the paper, the momentum will carry you to the finish line.
