Not many people consider dance to be a sport but in reality, it is one of the toughest sports. You have to go out there and give a performance even though you are so tired, you have to keep it together until the end. Especially at competition you have to give it your all. At North Canyon we participate in a competition held at the school called pink state. We go up against schools all over Arizona, some which include Maryvale, Canyon View and others. Everyone comes and shows all of their talent, making you stare in awe at how amazing their performances and facials are. Observing how they make it all seem so easy when in reality it is the complete opposite.
Dance line participates in 3 categories, which are jazz, hip hop, and solos. We had one soloist, Mina, who went out there and gave a breathtaking performance. A still that’s in between jazz and hip hop, or in other words a jazz funk. Our jazz was a small group that was about six girls who performed to the song scream by Micheal Jackson. Lastly our large hip hop consisted about ten girls that was a mix of different songs. I can go on about what each dance was and what it consisted of, but no one talks about the behind the scenes of what it took to make these masterpieces.
Long practices, lots of attitude, sweat, and most importantly dedication. Wake up every morning at 5 in the morning to arrive at school and quickly get to work. Our coaches put the most pressure on us to make these dances perfect and honestly made us want to quit multiple times. Even though we did want to quit multiple times we already made the commitment and we were going to stick to it.
The day of the competition as you walk in performances have already started. You watch as people are doing flips and these beautiful turns and all you start to feel is your hands sweat and your stomach turns. In a way, you start to doubt if you are good enough. But once you get out there you forget about all these stresses because you are having fun. No matter if you get an award or not what mattered to everyone was the experience and being able to have fun.
