Green Day has officially performed for the 2026 Super Bowl! Green Day played for the pregame opening ceremony, rather than the halftime show. Their performances included popular songs like, “Holiday,” “Boulevard of Broken Dreams,” and “American Idiot”.
Green Day was chosen to play for the 60th anniversary game due to many of their aspects. For starters, they were formed in the Bay Area, so they are considered a California-native band. They’re also known for their antithetic rock, and are recognized as a lasting rock institution, so they were selected to bring energy to the pre-game.
Even though their performance only lasted for about 5-10 minutes, many people were happy they were on stage. “I felt it was a good performance, though the concerts are better” Mackenzie Fountain stated. The songs they played are super nostalgic to many people. This caused many to enjoy the performance they had.
Though, some fans were disappointed by the performance. Green Day is known for making their shows political, so many expected them to do it as the Super Bowl as well. Green Day ended up leaving politics out of their performance, and kept it to just songs. “I think the show was peak, I like how they broke the rules and cursed.” one fan stated. In their song “American Idiot”, they were supposed to leave out curse words, but the band went against the rules and stuck to the original lyrics. They stayed true to their song, which many fans appreciated.
